Seven Little Australians: Australian Children’s Classics

Ethel Turner

If you imagine you are going to read of model children you had better lay down this book immediately. Not one of the seven is really good, for the very excellent reason that Australian children never are.

Every so often, there comes a story so brilliant and lively and moving that it cannot be left in the past. Rediscover the magic of our country’s most memorable children’s books in the Penguin Australia Children’s Classics series of stories too precious to leave behind.

What a delight it was to return to this childhood favourite. First published in 1894 and never out of print, Seven Little Australians truly is one of the great classics. The reader cannot help but be charmed by Ethel Turner’s wonderful characters – especially the very cheeky Judy. The children are extremely bold and embark on all sorts of amusing adventures (and misadventures). Despite a range of disagreements between various members of this sometimes chaotic household, there is an overriding sense of the genuine warmth shared between them. Well worth revisiting and introducing to the next generation of girls and boys ages 10 and up.
